What to Expect

On your first visit to Absolute Integrated Medicine you will be asked to fill out standard health intake and history forms. Your acupuncturist will then have a brief consultation with you to go over your chief complaint and relevant health history. This is a good time to address any questions or concerns you may have. The acupuncturist will likely check your pulses and look at your tongue. The acupuncturist will determine a treatment plan to best address any current and/or chronic issues. Approximately 8-12 acupuncture needles will then be inserted into specific points along pertinent meridians, generally along the lower legs and arms, around the facial area and sometimes on the back or stomach. There is no specific number of needles the acupuncturist will use because this is determined by the type of treatment you are receiving. The rest of your time will be spent relaxing in comfort (approximately 30 minutes). Future treatments may be exactly the same, slightly different or entirely different as the acupuncturist treats you for what your body is needing on each particular visit. After the needles are removed, your acupuncturist will discuss other treatments that may assist with your healing such as herbs, homeopathy, etc.

During your acupuncture treatment it is common to experience any number of sensations, such as warmth, tingling or a sense of heaviness in the body and usually a deep feeling of relaxation. Many patients fall asleep during their acupuncture treatment.

Acupuncture’s effectiveness is cumulative, and patience may be necessary, especially if you are dealing with a long term, chronic condition. More frequent visits may resolve your condition more quickly. Your acupuncture physician will recommend an appropriate treatment schedule based on your needs.
